Virtual summit Reuters Next has kicked off 2021 to gather global leaders and forward thinkers to reimagine solutions to the challenges the new year brings.
In a discussion ‘Keep it in the Ground: A Radical Solution to Climate change’ – environmentalists made a case to leave oil and gas deposits untapped and to plug abandoned wells. Emphasising this would benefit investors and society as a whole. Participants said economic, climate and healthcare upheavals point to the need to move toward developing cleaner energy sources, environmentally friendly jobs and healthier communities.
“We have an opportunity right now to responsibly put in place a plan to manage the decline of the oil and gas” industry, said Janet Redman, climate campaign director at environmental group Greenpeace USA.
